Goodspeed also announced that its 2012 season at the Opera House will begin April 20 with a new production of the 1966 hit "Mame," which will run through July 1, to be followed by the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic "Carousel" from July 13 to Sept. The new housing will allow Goodspeed to do more productions each year and to plan increased arts education activities during Goodspeed's off season. The project cost $5 million, with $2.5 million coming from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and $3 million from private donors. Spokeswoman Elisa Hale pointed out this is the first project of its kind in the nation and the largest construction project in Goodspeed Musicals' history (a history that includes more Broadway and off-Broadway transfers than I can list here, including the original productions of "Annie" and "Man of La Mancha").
